The Compass House is dedicated to creating safe, supportive, and affordable recovery housing for women transitioning into the community after completing residential treatment or treatment in jail or prison.
The Compass House promotes individual responsibility and self determination with the women who reside their having opportunities for leadership and for contributing to the governance of the household and its operations through the weekly house meeting.
The women learn through experience how to support each other and hold each other accountable for their responsibilities to themselves, and the house and to decreasingly depend on the services provided to them.
Women may live in the house for up to two years so long as they are maintaining a Recovery lifestyle with their shared financial responsibility to the house being tied to their income. This gives them a opportunity to stabilize focus on their recovery needs and begin to build a healthy sober future.
Compass House opened its doors in February 2020 providing a supportive congregate living environment for up to eight women, with counseling and treatment available through Horizons Counseling Center’s outpatient programs and recovery supports provided by Navigating Recovery of the Lakes Region.
The Compass House offers this supportive housing at a subsidized rate.
Horizons
The lack of safe housing in the Lake region is a severe barrier to sustained recovery for individuals, completing residential treatment and engaging in outpatient treatment and recovery support services in their local communities.
This problem is even more problematic for women who are vulnerable to exploitation and abuse than their male counterparts and even more so for those with criminal histories and coming out of treatment in jails and prison.
Therefore, in April 2019, Horizons Counseling Center partnered with Lakes Region Community Developers and Navigating Recovery of the Lakes Region to apply for funding for the NH Housing Finance Authority through the NH Affordable Housing Fund to rehab a house owned by the Community Developers and to use it as a supportive transitional sober housing program for women, completing residential treatment for substance use, and co-occurring disorders with a priority given to those involved in the criminal justice system.
